Aims

The aim of the module is to gain a critical understanding of how global forces shape business environments in a world where national economies are no longer self-contained entities but are interconnected and interdependent. Students will examine the interplay between International Business, the global economy and the rise of emerging economies. The course emphasises the development of skills to understand and analyse the issues that firms face when operating responsibly in international markets. The module will cover relevant theories of trade and students will be supported in investigating their application to real world contexts.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a critical understanding of the complexities of operating in a global environment, the impact of globalisation and the rise of emerging economies.

Critically analyse the international trade environment and the drivers of transnational trade and key contemporary issues such as ethics and global social responsibility.
3.
Critically evaluate the concepts and models of international trade theory to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in international business.
4.
Critically assess the role of multinational organisations in development of emerging economies drawing on international business and management with international theories.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
  1. International Trade Theory and developments in the new (post-global recession) economic and business environment and the role that business and management play in the development of emerging economies.
  2. The drivers of globalisation: declining trade and investment barriers and the role of technological change.
  3. The changing demographics of the global economy: changing world output, trade and foreign direct investment, particularly in emerging economies.
  4. Strategies, structures and operations of international business.
  5. Exporting, importing and countertrade.
  6. Sustainability in supply chains, logistics.
  7. Ethics and social responsibility in international business and trade.
