Aims

To enable and support students in conducting an independent research project in the field of educational psychology using both/either quantitative and qualitative research methods, and data analysis skills appropriate to their research questions.

Learning Outcomes

1.
To apply knowledge in producing an appropriate and defensible piece of research within the field of educational psychology.
2.
To demonstrate an appropriate knowledge of quantitative or qualitative research methods and data analysis pertinent to the dissertation topic and question.
3.
To appropriately report the findings of the student’s original research question in a manner be suitable for publication in a psychology focused journal using American Psychological Association (APA) formatting and referencing.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will build upon and cover key content and theories found in the Research Methods and Data Analysis module and is an opportunity to put those skills into practice. Content covered in this module includes but is not limited to:
  • T-Test.
  • Multiple regression.
  • Research design.
  • Participant sampling.
  • Ethics and safeguarding considerations.
  • Thematic analysis.
  • Interpretative phenomenological analysis.
  • Grounded theory.
Module Overview:
This module addresses the core curricular areas of research design and ethics and both quantitative and qualitative methods and data analysis in psychology. In this module we consider techniques and approaches to conducting original, empirical research through a dissertation. The module will introduce the broad topic areas and give students a chance to apply specific theories within psychology to original research with an educational focus.
Additional Information:
This module begins in January with no taught content timetabled. All content delivered to the student will be through supervision and one-to-one meetings between students and dissertation supervisor who will guide and inform students on appropriate forms of analysis and other considerations.
