Aims

To introduce students to the fundamentals of qualitative and quantitative research methods.

To develop understanding of data analysis techniques within the field of educational psychology.

Learning Outcomes

To understand and outline the differences between, and utilisation, of quantitative and qualitative approaches to research including their theoretical underpinnings
2.
To critical appraise and discuss different approaches of quantitative and qualitative designs and data analysis.
3.
To synthesise and apply quantitative and qualitative principles of research to academic practice and the educational context.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will introduce and outline key content and theories from both quantitative and qualitative approaches to psychological research data analysis. Content covered in this module includes but is not limited to:
  • T-Test.
  • Multiple regression.
  • Research design.
  • Participant sampling.
  • Ethics and safeguarding considerations.
  • Thematic analysis.
  • Interpretative phenomenological analysis.
  • Grounded theory.
Module Overview:
This module addresses the core curricular areas of research design and ethics and both quantitative and qualitative methods and data analysis in psychology. In this module we consider techniques and approaches to conducting original, empirical research. The module will introduce the broad topic areas and give students a chance to apply specific theories within psychology to original research with an educational focus.
Additional Information:
This module will introduce general principles regarding research methods and data analysis before outlining more sophisticated analytical and research techniques.
