Aims
To embed awareness and understanding of equality and diversity, including issues facing international, non-traditional, part-time, distance learning PGRs
Learning Outcomes
1.
Iterate their responsibilities and the responsibilities of PGRs and professional colleagues in the doctoral journey;
2.
Align supervisory styles with individual PGR needs to provide appropriate pedagogical and developmental support;
3.
Critically evaluate current scholarly research on postgraduate supervision and be able to locate it within a continuum of doctoral education;
4.
Critically reflect upon their own supervision practice, enhancing their supervision practices in light of their experiences and learning;
5.
Evaluate critically approaches to monitoring, assessing and feeding back on PGR progress and attainment on research programmes, including examination.

International and disciplinary conceptions of the research degree: PhDs, professional doctorates, practice-based doctorates, doctorates by public and published work How to build a supervisory relationship: roles, responsibilities, boundaries The PGR Student Lifecycle: Institutional procedures, processes and regulations for research degrees Supporting the PGR through the Researcher Development Framework (RDF) and the Development Needs Analysis The national context: the impact of changes to policy, funding and institutional structures on the processes of research supervision Research ethics, intellectual property and responsible research conduct: supervision issues Managing and Monitoring PGR Student Performance The examination of a research thesis 1: Supervisor responsibilities and the Viva. The examination of a research thesis 2: Training for the role of Internal examiner The examination of a research thesis 3: Training for the role of the Independent Chair at a viva

This module offers a framework for research supervision development, addressing regulations, codes of practice, and promoting the exchange of best practices among supervisors from different disciplines.

Additional Information:
This practice-based and developmental module provides a framework in which participants may evaluate and develop their practice of research supervision, in the context of current scholarship and debate about research degrees. The syllabus will identify themes for analysis and draw from reading and discussion in order contribute to a critical reflective overview. The module will introduce both new and experienced supervisors to processes, regulations and codes of practice within the University and in the sector as a whole. It will provide a forum for sharing good practice, supervisory methods and experience with colleagues across and within disciplines.
