Aims
The overall aim of this module is to equip the health care professional with a critical understanding of the aetiology, presentation and impact of congenital heart disease on children and their families.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate a higher level of knowledge relating to the impact of common congenital cardiac anomalies on the physical, psychological and social needs of CHD patients and their families
2.
Demonstrate a higher level of knowledge of the common interventions and subsequent specific care needs of patients with a congenital cardiac anomaly
3.
Demonstrate skills in locating and evaluating a range of relevant bibliographic and information sources in order to inform and develop a critical understanding of current issues in the Congenital Heart Disease field.
4.
Challenge arguments and construct, develop and defend a coherent argument using the conventions and skills of academic scholarship.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Developmental anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system - including embryological development of congenital heart defects (CHD) Pathophysiology and management of different congenital heart conditions Assessment and therapy strategies to minimise the long-term effects of CHD Healthcare and psycho-social implications - including aspects of the transition from paediatrics to adult care Patient perspective Ethical issues

Module Overview:
This module aims to equip you as a health care professional with a critical understanding of the aetiology, presentation and impact of congenital heart disease on children and their families.
This module aims to equip you as a health care professional with a critical understanding of the aetiology, presentation and impact of congenital heart disease on children and their families.
Additional Information:
The assessment strategy for this module has 2 components: Presentation OSCE The criteria for admission to the module is that candidates are: semester 1, Semester 2 and Summer offering 1. Currently working as a registered professional in a relevant area of practice. 2. Ideally candidates will have studied at degree (level 6) however if this is not the case the applicants skills and professional experience will be discussed to allow the module leader to assess capability to study at level 7. The final award is a Continuing Professional Development – Congenital Heart Disease. The module learning outcomes and relevant subject benchmark statements are in line with the QAA framework for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The module is aligned to the Level 7 descriptors for a Level 7 Higher Education Qualification The students have access to a VLE and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The students also have access to the module leader through phone contact, emails and face to face meetings. A module guide is also provided which guides students to the wider range of support available. Module written in 2021. An appropriately qualified external examiner will be selected from the team for the MSc Advanced Practice. In addition the module will be offered as an optional module on the MSc Advanced Health Care Practice Clinical Programme Code is 36626
