Aims

To enable professionals to develop a critical appreciation of related ethical and legal issues within advanced practice.

Learning Outcomes

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Overview of the English legal system. The legal aspects of, consent, negligence, confidentiality, autonomy and relevant legal cases/precedents. Health related statute and common law. Guidelines and directives. Current issues arising from current and emerging NHS policies, clinical governance and evidence based practice. Traditional and contemporary ethical theory, making moral decisions, articulating moral arguments, critiquing arguments, values and ethical decision-making. Negotiated topics may include: Contemporary case studies, end of life decisions, living wills, advanced directives, human rights, health and access to resources, protecting the vulnerable, moral aspects of pain and resuscitation, organ donation. Children and ethical-legal decision making. Mental illness and ethical-legal decision making.
Module Overview:
Aimed at those working as registered professionals in a relevant area of practice, this module will build your skills in advanced practice decision making. It will also raise your appreciation of the ethical and legal responsibilities involved in advanced practice decision making.
Additional Information:This module aims to raise practitioner's appreciation of ethical and legal responsibilities in relation to advanced practice decision making. The module learning outcomes and relevant subject benchmark statements are in line with the QAA framework for higher education qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The module is aligned to the Level 7 descriptors for a Level 7 Higher Education Qualification. The module is delivered over one semester. September and January The criteria for admission to the module is that candidates are currently working as a registered professional in a relevant area of practice. Ideally candidates will have studied at degree (level 6) however if this is not the case the applicants skills and professional experience will be discussed to allow the module leader to assess capability to study at level 7 The final award is a Continuing Professional Development – Ethical and Legal Issues within Advanced Practice The students have access to canvas and the University's other range of electronic support such as access to the electronic library facilities. The students also have access to the module leader through phone contact, emails and face to face meetings. A module guide is also provided which guides students to the wider range of support available.
