Aims

This module aims to enable students to: * research an aspect of current popular music that is personally and professionally relevant and useful * use and build upon the theoretical knowledge and research/writing skills developed in Popular Music Context 1 and Popular Music Context 2. * evaluate and synthesise information, ideas and concepts from a wide range of sources * develop research and writing skills to a high level * produce a coherent and persuasive evidence-based argument.

Learning Outcomes

Propose and present a programme of research into a personally and professionally relevant aspect of popular music.
2.
Analyse and critically evaluate a personally and professionally relevant aspect of popular music, synthesising theories and information from a range of sources.
3.
Construct a coherent and well evidenced argument, communicated using academic writing skills and conventions.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The teaching on this module supports students’ self-directed learning. * Lectures focus on key research and writing skills that help students to complete the module successfully. * Seminars provide opportunities for students to debate ideas and discuss their progress in small groups. * Assessed presentations take place in seminar groups, for which students receive peer and tutor feedback. * Individual tutorials enable students to discuss their work in detail with a supervising tutor. * Students use private study time throughout the module to carry out independent research and prepare their presentations and written essays.
