Aims

This module aims to introduce the principles of legal methods, legal argument and legal concepts. Students will be encouraged to develop skills in legal argument both in writing and orally, and to broaden their engagement with a variety of legal materials, including law textbooks, journal articles, statutes and case law; students will be guided on how to use these effectively in their research and argument. The module aims to ensure that students have a solid introduction to the concepts, terminology and procedures of law as well as an overview of its main theoretical and practical aspects which are necessary to address the subject at postgraduate level.

Demonstrate knowledge of the institutions, procedures and terminology of the Law

Analyse and critique the concepts, principles, values and rules of the Law

Present an aspect of the Law, showing a nuanced understanding of the principles of legal argument

Construct clear, concise and accurate written argument both orally and in writing

Demonstrate a familiarity with different sources of data and materials relevant to the Law

Demonstrate knowledge of Human Rights law

Outline an understanding of the functioning of international law and legal personality together with company liability for criminal acts

Outline Syllabus:- Fundamental principles of the law - English law: the nature and categories of law - The Rule of Law and Sources of Law - Legal institutions - The personnel of the law: legal professionals - The importance of procedure - The development of legal principles - Reading and using legal materials: textbooks and journals - Reading and using legal materials: statutes - Reading and using legal materials: case law - Constructing legal arguments - Debating Legal issues
Module Overview:
This module aims to introduce the principles of legal methods, legal argument and legal concepts.
Additional Information:This module will include a trip to Liverpool Crown Court wherever possible. This module will give students introductory training in legal research techniques. Louise Burton - Module Leader.
