Aims
Students will independently plan, organise and manage effective research in order to acquire new knowledge of a self-selected project. This module is designed to prepare and enable students to produce a research report that justifies the selection of a Major Project. It represents the culmination and consolidation of the student's research within their chosen project area
Learning Outcomes
1.
Apply comprehensive analytical secondary research to a self-selected 1st order problem
2.
Undertake critical analysis of the chosen area of research
3.
Construct a robust argument for the design problem based on secondary research
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module is composed of an initial series of lectures and workshops/seminars including:
• Problem identification and project selection criteria.
• Reading and effective note taking.
• Literature searching.
• Evaluating technical literature and other sources of information
• Harvard referencing and Endnote.
• Qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods.
• Critical thinking and analysis.
• Presenting data.
• Academic writing and communicating understanding of existing research in respect of a chosen area.
• Academic writing. Structuring and formatting academic reports.
Students are also encouraged to keep meticulous records and work diaries of their progress with the Major Project as a reflective practice technique to facilitate referencing and referral at the time of writing the project.

Additional Information:UN Sustainable Development Goals
This module includes content, which relates to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals
This project module allows students to select a global first order problem and develop a user-centred solution within a suitable design domain. As such, this module has the capacity to cover a large range of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
