Aims

This module aims to ensure students:

  • Develop a systematic understanding of the literature relevant to the object of study;
  • Explore the methodological and ethical underpinnings to the object of study;
  • Engage with the supervision process.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will allow students to conduct a literature review on their topic of interest, develop a research proposal, complete the ethics form, and write the methodology chapter. The research proposal will include a statement of research objectives and questions, a brief outline of the methods of data collection and analysis to be used, rationale for undertaking the study, and any potential ethical issues. The methodology chapter will outline the overall methodological approach (epistemology and ontology) and discuss the proposed methods in more detail. Students will also complete a supervision diary, providing evidence of having seen their dissertation supervisor at least twice in the course of the semester. These activities will be done in conjunction with an allocated dissertation supervisor who will see the student for a total of 8 hours across the first semester. These meetings will be augmented by a total of 6 lectures and 5 workshops.
Module Overview:
This module will ensure you develop a systematic understanding of the literature relevant to the object of study. You will then use this knowledge to develop a research proposal, complete the ethics form, and write the methodology chapter. 
Additional Information:
The module is concerned with ensuring students lay down a firm foundation in terms of literature review, research proposal, methodology and research ethics for the Dissertation - Part 2 module that students will undertake in Semester 2. This module provides the foundation on which students will build and work towards completing their dissertation.
