Aims

1. To critically analyse theoretical explanations of inequalities, social exclusion, harm and marginalisation. 2. To utilise a range of contemporary case studies to explore the experiences of excluded and marginalised groups and as a means of developing students’ ability to critically apply criminological and sociological theoretical perspectives. 3. To explore the opportunities and barriers to addressing inequality and exclusion, situating discussion within historical, social and political contexts.

Apply criminological / sociological theory to a specific case study on social exclusion

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:o Defining and explaining social exclusion o Conceptualisations of poverty and exclusion o Understanding social inequalities o Case studies in social exclusion, divisions and inequalities The specific case studies on the module will be centred on the research expertise of the module teaching team combined with occasional guest lecturers to keep the module current and informed by research.
Module Overview:
This module aims to develop your understanding of processes of social exclusion and social inequalities. It draws upon theoretical and empirical accounts of inequality and exclusion to help you to gain an understanding of social divisions and intersectionalities. A case-study approach will be employed to develop your ability to apply key exclusionary concepts and to critically assess both the implications of exclusion and official responses to it.
