Aims

1.To establish queer history as an approach. 2.To understand some of the defining events in British queer history across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. 3. To introduce students to key historiographical works and scholarly debates in queer British history.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Queer Britain examines key moments in the formation of queer Britain. We examine the role played by individuals and major turning points in the history of queer Britain, ranging from the Labouchere amendment and the Second World War to the Sexual Offences Act of 1967. Queer Britain will also introduce you to some of the methodological challenges that are inherent in the history of sexuality and to some of the theories that have shaped its development. Sources that will be used include biographies, autobiographies and works of fiction (including works by Quentin Crisp and Radclyffe Hall) newspaper reports, cartoons, oral testimony, court proceedings and films. Module Overview:
The aim of this module is to investigate the formation of queer identities in Britain between 1880-1980. You will utilise a range of primary and secondary materials to assess how queer identities were formed, expressed and managed in Britain, 1880-1980.
