Aims

1. To develop the student's ability to identify a relevant IR and Politics topic and formulate a research proposal designed to explore aspects of that topic to a high level.
2. To develop the student’s ability to analyse and interpret relevant academic and professional sources in pursuit of a pre-defined problem set by an external body chosen by LJMU.
3. To develop the student’s ability to gather evidence for a sustained argument and present that argument with clarity and fluency in a written and oral format.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Develop a range of skills that will enable you to carry out professional-level research in the field.
2.
Locate, gather, and critically analyse relevant evidence to the given problem, and use it to robustly defend your solution.
3.
Be capable of presenting a sustained argument with clarity and fluency in written and oral formats.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Hacking for MoD (H4MoD) is an interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial module that provides you with the opportunity to work with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Intelligence Community (IC) to better address the nation’s emerging threats and security challenges. The module is an applied one that sees students form teams to engage directly with complex, real world problems proposed by UK government sponsors. H4MoD covers policy, economics, technology, national security, and any area needed to address the problem sponsor’s challenge.

In the module, you will be assigned a team and a problem, and then be provided with a range of relevant methodological tools and techniques. As the module progresses, student teams will be required to discover and validate customer needs and to continually build iterative prototypes to test whether you have understood the problem and solution. Teams take a hands-on approach requiring close engagement with actual military, Ministry of Defence and other government agency end-users, using their real-world challenges.

The goal, within the constraints of a classroom and a limited amount of time, is to give you a framework to test solution hypotheses using a start-up model while creating all of the pressures and demands of the real world in an early-stage start-up. The class is designed to give you the experience of working as a team and turning an idea into a solution for real-world problems facing the Ministry of Defence and Intelligence Community.

It is important to bear in mind that this module aims to simulate what start-ups and entrepreneurship is like in the real world: the need to take conceptually-sound decisions amidst uncertainty, challenging deadlines, and often conflicting input.
Module Overview:
The module is based on the Hacking for Defense™ (H4D) programme initially developed at Stanford University (http://hacking4defense.stanford.edu) and is an education initiative sponsored by the U.S. Defense Accelerator, and National Security Innovation Network (NSIN). In the UK, Hacking for Ministry of Defence (H4MoD) is funded by the Ministry of Defence.
Additional Information:
In the first semester students will take workshops focused on research skills, including interview techniques. In the second semester, they will participate in the MOD hacking programme, respond to the question set, interview government personnel, and present and write-up their findings. Their advisor will support them in delivering this part of the module.

There is a cap on having no more than two groups enrolled, with a maximum of 5 students per group.

It is important to note that LJMU will be responsible for providing the advisor for the academic delivery/research skills sessions, for academic supervision of the project and for assessment of the module.
