Aims
To instil students with an understanding of research as a process for enabling the development of a thematic brief, to then be developed spatially as part of module 6121ARC or 6121INT.
To facilitate knowledge of architecture / interior architecture, its theories and contextuality with focus upon contemporary practice.
To engage in analysis of architectural designs of this period and relate them to contemporary philosophical ideas and social phenomena.
To undertake contextual analysis and wider research to inform the initial stages of a Comprehensive Design Project module 6123ARC or 6123INT.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Articulate the cultural and intellectual histories theories and technologies that influence the design of architecture, and be able to appraise these in the preparation of a brief positing a design approach.
2.
Critically analyse architectural precedent, describe specific examples and how they might inform studio design projects.
3.
Demonstrate an understanding of the spatial, social, and technological aspects of architecture /interior architecture and communicate their relevance to a chosen area of studio investigation.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
This is the research module associated with both the design project of Semester 1 and the Comprehensive Design Module which is your final design module in the Degree. For the Semester 1 design project the area of research will be identified and guidance given on technique for production of an appropriate essay. For the Comprehensive Design Project research students will chose a theme by opting for one of the subject / design areas offered up by staff. Students are then expected to undertake their own research to unearth relevant sources to address their particular design theme through their own interpretation. The intention here is that this work is an active enquiry into the interpretation of the subject that will catalyse the student's thematic investigations and fundamentally inform their design work.

Module Overview:
To module will provide you with an understanding of research as a process for enabling the development of a thematic brief, to then be developed spatially as part of module 6121ARC or 6121INT. Alongside this, you will also develop your knowledge of architecture / interior architecture, its theories and contextuality with focus upon contemporary practice. This will help you to engage in analysis of architectural designs of this period and relate them to contemporary philosophical ideas and social phenomena. You will undertake contextual analysis and wider research to inform the initial stages of a Comprehensive Design Project module 6123ARC or 6123INT.

Additional Information:
This research module informs both design projects of academic year with two separate assessed submissions. At the start of Semester 1 an essay is to be produced, researching defined specific themes ahead of studio design work in modules 6121ARC or 6121INT. The larger 'Comprehensive Design Project Research' submission is completed at the end of Semester 1, and this piece of work informs your final semester studio work. For this students have a choice of subject areas from a range of primer briefs presented to them by staff, to then develop as an in-depth piece of research to establish the conceptual / contextual framework for your final design project. Students are expected to engage in a significant element of background reading and research. The outcome is an illustrated report of approximately 4500 words.
