Apply the skills of, literacy, digital, media, and technological literacy needed to ensure safe and effective midwifery practice.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
There are 2 components to the syllabus.
Skills and knowledge in practice will be evaluated over the academic year, with a practice document, the Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement (MORA) attached, which will enable students to demonstrate accurate record keeping and progress towards achieving Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) proficiencies, and complete the programme as outlined by the NMC (2018). The NMC (2018) Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment are used to guide the MORA. These are stipulated in the NMC Standards (2019) and are from the EU Directive 2005/36/EC Article 42 and Annex V Standards for pre-registration midwifery programmes - The Nursing and Midwifery Council (nmc.org.uk); Standards for pre-registration midwifery programmes (nmc.org.uk)
Clinical Skills: Cannulation, amniotomy, episiotomy, Perineal Suturing, CTG interpretation, FSE application, breech birth, maternal and neonatal resuscitation, ECG assessment, blood product transfusion, enhanced maternal/HDU care.
Advancing practice, tocophobia, pain management, postnatal complications, hemodynamic monitoring, maternal mental health, Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI), nutrition, Continuity of care, Case-loading.
safeMedicate is a stand-alone medicines management programme which is incorporated into this module. Students need to demonstrate accountability and responsibility as an autonomous professional midwife to provide safe and effective midwifery care, and thus they have to achieve 100% to pass this medicines management online examination. The students will receive either a pass or fail mark, and this element does not contribute to the overall degree classification.
Learning Activities
Lectures with discussions, workshops, on-line learning, tutorials, simulation, and self-directed study.
safeMedicate is designed to support the learning, synthesis, and diagnostic measurement of cognitive competence in the critical elements of medication dosage problem solving.

Module Overview:
This is a non-standard year-long module, which runs across the course of the year to enable students to develop and consolidate their midwifery skills and knowledge. A practice document MORA is attached to this module and needs to be passed (either a pass or fail) in order to complete the requirements of the programme and be eligible for entry onto the NMC register.
The student will demonstrate knowledge and understanding that the complications and additional care needs of women/ birthing people, newborn infants, partners and families may relate to physical, psychological, social, cultural, and spiritual factors.
During this module students will carry caseloads in order to build on their case loading experiences from levels 4 and 5.
Students will be required to pass all required elements of their Midwifery Ongoing Record of Achievement: NMC Proficiencies for Midwives (2019) document (MORA).
The assessment for this module is component marked with the Safe Medicate online Examination. The Safe Medicate competency will be assessed using an online software package. This needs to be passed at 100% in level 6 in order to prove competence. Each attempt comprises four opportunities to achieve 100%. This overall mark does not contribute to the overall award. This also meets the other learning outcomes such as the use of technology, digital media and ensuring safety.

Additional Information:
No Exceptional Second Referral (ESR) or Final Module Attempts (FMAs) are allowed for the MORA element. The restrictions on the third attempt apply to the MORA element only. Students can still have a third attempt on the safeMedicate examination.
Students awarded a fail grade for both first and referral attempts at the competency component (MORA Practice Document) will not be allowed to continue on the programme.
This module is approved for year-long delivery. This is a pass/fail module and will not be used in the calculation of the level 6 award mark.
