Aims

1. To foster political engagement with the state apparatus whilst it is developing government policy on an IR-related topic. 2. Develop an understanding of how a person can effectively engage with the state apparatus 3. Develop an ability to write detailed and convincing arguments backed-up with solid evidence

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically appraise the role of Select Committees within the political process of policy-making.
2.
Analyse the relevant IR-related issue, and be able to design a detailed response to the Committee investigation.
3.
Justify and defend their taken position on the issue the Select Committee is investigating.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The focus of the module content will depend on what the IR-related Select Committees are investigating and requesting written submissions. The instructor will assess the written evidence assignment, and then submitted to the Committee. If no such investigation is ongoing at the time of delivery then it will use a previous investigation and be assessed by the instructor but not submitted to the Committee. The module will include a number of external speakers that will help inform the students of Select Committees. It will also include a trip to the UK Parliament to witness a Committee in action. Module will typically include the following topics • What is a Select Committee and where does it sit in the government policy-making process? • How can the individual engage with the state policy-making apparatus? • How to write a convincing written evidence • Understanding the issue, and your positions on it (subject examined will be contingent on what the Committee is investigating

This is a practical module designed to enable you to engage with the state apparatus through submitting written evidence to an International Relations-related UK Parliament Select Committee. It also educates you on the state political process and supports the development of your political positions.
