Aims

This module aims to provide students critical theoretical, empirical, policy and practical understanding of policing and the security industry. Moreover, qualitative research skills, writing skills and presentation skills examined to let the student comprehend the multifaceted and entangled policing, security and risk realities.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Critically assess the theoretical, empirical, policy and practice frameworks of policing, security and risk.
2.
Identify, apply and report on a range of qualitative methods, stating strengths and weaknesses and their relevance for critical social scientific research on policing, security and risk.
3.
Present their research-based findings, embedded in critical theoretical considerations, in written and verbal format.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:*Block 1 - Theoretical perspectives and policy context *Block 2 - Empirical and practical knowledge in policing and security *Block 3 - Understanding qualitative methods and reflection *Block 4 - Interview, thematic analysis, essay and presentation
Module Overview:
This module aims to provide you with critical theoretical, empirical, policy and practical understanding of policing and the security industry. You will gain qualitative skills, writing skills and presentation skills to support your understanding of policing, security and risk realities.
Additional Information:The module aims to develop students understanding of the work of statutory and non-statutory bodies in society and relate this experience to policing and security in society. The module will build on L4's Introduction to Critical Criminology and Policing in a Diverse Society, and L5's Youth Justice, Professional Skills for Policing and Investigative Skills. While L6 studies are not a part of study for the Certificate in Knowledge of Policing the module addresses elements of the National Occupational Standards CD5/ CI 101/ CB1/ CJ201/ CJ101/ GC10/ CD1/ BE2/ CK1 and CK2. http://www.accreditedqualifications.org.uk/qualifications-and-credit-framework-qcf.html
