Aims
To enable the student to:
Apply knowledge of legal and ethical principles to midwifery practice.
Learning Outcomes

Critically discuss the legal aspects surrounding the provision of maternity care.
2.
Critically apply ethical guiding principles to the governing of midwifery practice.
3.
Critically reflect upon the complexities of legal and ethical principles in contemporary society and midwifery practice.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Principles of ethics; models of ethical decision making; ethical dilemmas; principles of law; moral considerations of care offered; women centred care; informed choice; consent to care; women’s choices that are outside of guidelines; capacity to consent; assault; conscience clauses; eugenics; feticide; adoption/surrogacy; termination of pregnancy; mental capacity; Gillick competences; Fraser guidelines; age of consent; safeguarding; negligence; record keeping; breastfeeding (BFI standards) medication; NMC requirements.
