Aims
To enable the student to:
1. be proficient in examining the neonate to the PHE NIPE screening standards.
2. provide holistic care to the newborn infant and the family.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Undertake the newborn infant physical examination, demonstrating professional responsibility and accountability for the validation of normality.
2.
Refer any abnormalities appropriately using NIPE guidelines.
3.
Synthesise knowledge and understanding of anatomy, physiology, and epigenetics of fetal development, adaptation to life, the newborn infant and very early child development.
4.
Demonstrate and apply skills and knowledge regarding infant feeding.
5.
Evidence the ability to have sensitive conversations with women and their families around care of the newborn infant, including infant feeding, complications and additional care needs.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Provision of non-discriminatory, respectful, compassionate, and kind care; family centred care; evidence based practice; informed choice; public health; first 1001 days; health promotion and protection strategies; maternal influences on neonatal health; the ‘normal’ newborn infant; common newborn conditions; dysmorphia; Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE); applied NIPE standards, neonatal screening and screening pathways; primary and secondary care; safeguarding; knowledge of Solihull Approach.

Additional Information:The completion of this module will provide the student with skills to examine the neonate in line with NIPE standards.
In order to be successful, students must pass and submit their clinical assessment document associated with the practice element of this module, as well as the theoretical component. The clinical assessment profile will assess the clinical learning outcomes.
The module will enable the student midwife to develop the skills, expertise and knowledge in order to become professionally competent in the examination and assessment of the newborn, thus enhancing their role and facilitating the provision of holistic care for the woman, baby and family.
The practice competency for this module is demonstrated by the successful completion of a NIPE document.
