Aims
To give the students the opportunity to independently undertake an academic project on sound technological principles and intellectual reasoning. To integrate knowledge and skills developed in the subject areas, organising work within a specified time frame and presenting the findings in both written and oral form.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Plan a programme of project work with a clear set of aims and objectives.
2.
Organise and coordinate the resources at their disposal to achieve the project aims, including liaison with outside organisations.
3.
Demonstrate their ability to learn new skills, acquire new knowledge, adapt current skills and knowledge and apply them to specific outcomes in a self-directed mode of learning.
4.
Produce a written dissertation in accordance with detailed guidelines on presentation and referencing.
5.
Defend the completed research work and its conclusions in a viva voce examination.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students select a research project on a topic of their choosing. With support from an allocated supervisor, students:
Develop a set of aims and objectives
Identify and justify appropriate research methods.
Undertake a literature review.
Collect, collate and analyse appropriate research data.
Reach conclusions and reflect on the validity of their research.
Deliverables: Preparation and submission of a dissertation of no more than 8,000 words; viva voce examination at end of project.
