Aims

1. To further enable students to develop a cohesive and substantial body of work to a professional standard
2. To enable students to conceptualise their own writing in terms of a 'poetics', and to equip them with a language which enables them to discuss the theories and ideas behind the construction of their submitted portfolio.
3. To continue to equip students with a deep and wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary poetry and equip them with the knowledge of submitting and publication they will need for the professional writing world, specific to poetry.
4. To continue to develop students' participation in workshops.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an ability to discuss their own poetry in terms of a 'poetics'.

Demonstrate a wide-ranging knowledge of contemporary poetry, including publishing and professional practices.

Present a cohesive, refined and accomplished portfolio of poems which is ready to be submitted to professional magazines and publishers.

Demonstrate a high-level of critical insight when discussing the work of fellow students.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Students will analyse critical texts from poets writing about their own work and experiment with how best to articulate their own poetic practice, as well as examining/close reading poetry from a range of published sources.
Engage in a range of writing exercises, in both poetry and critical writing, to generate ideas for the portfolio and essay assignment.
Students will critique and workshop the work of their peers, as well as incorporating received feedback into their own draft work.
Students will take part in and attend masterclasses and guest-readings from invited poets/editors/publishers.
Module Overview:
Students will be working at an advanced level, demonstrating the skills both critical and creative necessary to succeed in the world of contemporary poetry. Work-based learning will be included in student interaction with guest speakers – poets who are published and viewed as leading writers in their field.
