Aims
1. To continue students' development as poets, building on skills acquired at Level 4 and Level 5, through close reading, discussion, analysis and sharing work.
2. To further develop students knowledge of a range of contemporary poetry and to enable students to analyse the ways in which poetry collections are structured and put together.
3. To enable students to begin to frame their work within a concept of poetics and to begin to build a cohesive body of work, ready for professional publication and submissions.
4. To encourage and facilitate students' participation in peer-feedback workshops, to strengthen their skills in editing, close reading, verbal communication and teamwork.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate the ability to produce a body of original poems, written, edited and presented to a professional standard.
2.
Demonstrate a good knowledge of the skills and techniques of contemporary poetry.
3.
Demonstrate an understanding of concepts of poetics and ways in which poetry collections can be structured and marketed.
4.
Demonstrate skills in close reading, analytical and critical thinking, and clear written communication.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Students will:
• Read and discuss the work of a range of contemporary poets, with a specific focus on the ways in which collections can be structured and put together.
• Continue to develop their awareness of ways in which contemporary poets achieve the effects they do, through close reading and discussion.
• Engage in a variety of writing exercises and experiences to help generate ideas and poem drafts.
• Engage in workshops focusing on the drafting and editing of their poems, giving and receiving constructive feedback.
Building on the poetry modules at Level 4 and Level 5, this module will cover topics such as:
• Aspects of form and structure.
• Imagery and how to use it effectively.
• Observation and description.
• Using research and responding to current or historical issues.
• Introducing other types of material into poems, e.g. found text, historical materials, myth or folkore.
• Developing longer poems or sequences.
• Responding to other texts and setting your work within wider literary contexts.
• Developing concepts of poetics and beginning to understand your work as a wider
whole, especially in relation to questions of marketing and publication.
