Aims
To explore, in-depth, a topic of interest and relevance to contemporary social work policy and practice utilising an empirical or literature based approach. Seminars will deal with emerging issues related to methodology, data analysis and the relationship to professional practice

Outline Syllabus:
Searching for literature refresher session / Using EndNote / Developing a literature review. Writing a systematised literature review / research paper. Seminars: Developing / piloting questionnaires and interview questions. Learning from others: researchers / social worker / past students share their research experiences. Being a research informed practitioner. Being pragmatic and getting creative: visual and participatory methods for social work research. Quantitative analysis for social workers. Qualitative analysis for social workers critically reflecting on research processes. Guidance for writing up / portfolio

Module Overview:
To explore, in-depth, a topic of interest and relevance to contemporary social work policy and practice utilising an empirical or literature based or 'hybrid' approach.
To explore, in-depth, a topic of interest and relevance to contemporary social work policy and practice utilising an empirical or literature based or 'hybrid' approach.
Additional Information:
This module provides a contemporary approach to evidence based practice by offering a range of dissertation options. This will include traditional pathways of primary and secondary research along with opportunities to explore and develop innovative practice such as staff development programmes and tools for service user interventions. Dissertations will be preceded by a mid-point assessment, which will differ slightly depending on the chosen pathway but may include ethics protocols (for primary research), search strategy and developing themes (for secondary research) and literature review with draft outline of the innovation design (for staff development project / service user intervention). Dissertation submission will additionally be followed by one of three options for students to present their research (either by viva, poster presentation or blog).
Overall this module reflects a contemporary understanding of social work research and evidence informed practice. Additional group seminars and 1-1 supervision will be tailored according to the pathways chosen by students.
