Aims
The primary aim of the module is to develop English language proficiency. Specifically, the module will increase students’ overall level of English by 1.0 IELTS band. It also aims to develop the language and skills required for university study and to develop preparedness to use Academic English in ongoing degree programmes.
Learning Outcomes

Develop proficiency in the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening
2.
Increase range and knowledge of general and academic vocabulary
3.
Use a range of appropriate grammatical features in all skill areas
4.
Develop strategies for listening and contributing to academic discourse
5.
Produce academic writing which shows understanding of conventions relating to style, structure, academic language and grammar
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:- Introduction to academic conventions and expectations
- Learning to listen and participate in lectures and seminars
- Working in groups to prepare and present oral information
- Selection, reading and analysis of academic source material
- Academic writing: vocabulary, structure and style
- Academic writing: styles and forms of assessment
Additional Information:The pre-sessional English module will be mapped against current UKVI requirements to ensure that students are able to demonstrate competencies at B2 of the Common European Framework of References for Language. The module will also be benchmarked against the International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS).
