Aims

This module will further develop the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding gained at Level 4 and offers in-depth learning in the student’s chosen specialism of stage and scenic construction. This will include developing their creative and practical approach to carpentry, metalwork, props and scenic sculpture, technical stage management, stage rigging, the use of specialist equipment, specialist software and current professional working practices; helping them develop a greater understanding of the current professional context of the specialist area of stagecraft and production.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an understanding of the key skills of a stage technician through the selection and operation of stage technologies and equipment pursuant to contemporary working techniques.
2.
Create a technical stage design to produce a working stage system and supporting documentation in alignment with industry regulations and current working practices.
3.
Explore, examine, and apply industry-standard construction techniques and specialised production processes effectively in a performance context and with consideration of environmental and sustainability issues.
4.
Create a system of work from initial idea or client's brief, and finesse to finished product with guidance.
5.
Select and operate tools safely, competently, and appropriately, and with a degree of autonomy and initiative, questioning and applying appropriate health and safety considerations
6.
Engage creatively and technically with materials and techniques employed in ‎prop making & scenic sculpture, with understanding of the interrelationship with scenic construction.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module offers a detailed study of the design and technical aspects of stage and scenic construction. Lectures and practical workshops will typically cover topics such as: technical stage management and scenic workshop roles and responsibilities; planning, paperwork, budgeting and preparation; stage technology and formats; rigging motor and equipment; counterweight flying terminology and techniques; drapes, cloths and materials; construction drawings; scenic construction and carpentry skills; prop-making and sculpture; welding and fabrication skills; and applying Construction Design and Management and Health and Safety regulations.
Module Overview:
This specialist pathway offers in-depth study and practice in technical stage management and scenic construction. You can develop skills and understanding, in stage operations, rigging and flying technologies, set building carpentry, welding and fabrication, prop-making and scenic sculpture, construction management and industry-related regulations; equipping you with the hand-on experience to become a skilled Scenic Carpenter, Technical Stage Manager or Head of Stage.
