Aims
This module will further develop the learner’s knowledge, skills and understanding gained at Level 4 and offers in-depth learning in the student’s chosen specialism of stage management. This will include thorough examination and appraisal of the whole production process for the stage management team, small prop-making, the use of equipment and current professional working practices. Students will develop an awareness of the related areas of production and event management, helping them develop a greater understanding of the underpinning infrastructure to creating a production.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate an understanding of the skills and processes of the stage management team required to successfully support the production process.
2.
Analyse, explore and produce necessary supporting paperwork to facilitate a production from the perspective of each stage management team role.
3.
Evaluate a text and source, make, supply, and maintain props for production, using appropriate materials and methods.
4.
Identify the appropriate infrastructural needs, current standards of good practice, licensing requirements, planning and logistical requirements to construct a performance in a specific space.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
This module offers a detailed study of the concepts and technical aspects of stage management. Lectures and practical workshops will typically cover topics such as: rehearsal support and delivery, the DSM - creating the prompt book, operating the prompt desk, and cueing; the role of the SM team in tech week; prop sourcing, props paperwork and the creation of cue/ tracking sheets and setting lists. There will be a series of practical prop making sessions to introduce a range of materials and methods, and the importance of diligent research and visual reference as well as prop maintenance.
Practical sessions may well include small-scale laboratory type experience, collaborating with other disciplines within LIPA.
The role of the production manager will be covered to engage students with the broader context of stage management and managing and facilitating the production process. Likewise, event planning will be examined to expand knowledge of the infrastructural and planning needs of performance, supported by site visits. Areas covered will include the technical, legal, and creative requirements affecting performance venues and found spaces.

You will develop understanding of the entire process of stage management by engaging in practical workshops, lecturers, and work on a live performance, either within LIPA or an external venue.
