Aims

To help students develop their music production practice with a growing awareness of the commercial expectations of industry stakeholders and the stylistic expectations of audiences.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The Producer

The history of music production related to significant social and technological shifts; the roles, responsibilities and activities of the contemporary music producer.

Genre

Identification of significant conventions within musical genres across the areas of musical content, musical performance, and sound qualities. Exploration of the significance of genre related to both audience and industry.

The Audience & The Performer

Audience expectation and how this shapes production values; the significance of authenticity in musical performance and recording; issues in collaborating with performers and creators.

Professional Production Techniques and Approaches

Identifying melodic structures in references; finding appropriate approaches to instrument arrangement, sound design & layering; creating drum and groove patterns; vocal performance, layering and sound design.
Module Overview:
This module encourages students to view music production from the perspectives of audience and industry, adopting primarily aesthetic and commercial views of music recording, and to take a critical approach to the identification and practical application of stylistic conventions and qualities in a contemporary music genre.
