Aims
The main aim is to give the students a greater awareness of the role of a designer, in preparation for taking on that mantle at Level 6. For this module the student will be allocated a more significant role with a greater set of responsibilities on a LIPA or external production. They will be an assistant to a third year designer and will be expected to work closely with them throughout the entire design and realisation process.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Develop an advanced understanding of a practical role within the production process. Through both your independent research of wider documentary sources and texts, to enhance presentation and improve production processes.
2.
Evaluate and employ a variety of design and production skills appropriately, applying an understanding of production processes, with a degree of autonomy and initiative, to communicate to an audience effectively.
3.
Engage in collaborative endeavour, negotiate effectively and sensitively, and contribute to a group process with tact and enthusiasm. Accept collective responsibility for setting goals, meeting deadlines and fulfilling set briefs.
4.
Evaluate and articulate their current level of knowledge and skills, to deepen understanding and identify areas for development.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Each student will work on a production (in-house at LIPA or external) and take on the role of Assistant Designer. They will assist third year designers and follow the production through from concept to get-out. They will take on much more responsibility than experienced on Level 4’s Production Process and evaluate the experience in preparation for taking on senior roles themselves at Level 6.
In preparation for taking on the Assistant Designer role there will be a series of lectures outlining the responsibilities and essential skills. We will hope to get in graduate designers who are working and earning a living by working as assistant designers in the industry in order to fully explain and decipher the role.

Additional Information:
In certain circumstances (and careful discussion) a Level 5 design student may take on a role as a lead designer on a LIPA production for this module. Or, it may be that a student designs a show in preparation for a production at Level 6 (with the design being assessed as part of their Level 5 studies). This would be if there is an early show in Term 1 as an attempt to alleviate the demanding summer design work for students and staff.
