Aims

The aim of this module is to develop camera, sound and post-production techniques in location filming situations and complement studio based work. The module will also consider visual narratives and presentation of character.  

Learning Outcomes

1.
Apply camera and microphone techniques in a location environment.
2.
Operate the core equipment components of location and OB units and demonstrate an understanding of the processes of which they are part.
3.
Analyse TV and film creation on location, the processes of capturing sound and vision and visual construction with reference to appropriate theory and known examples of location film or television.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will look at the technical needs of location filming and the different technical solutions available to practitioners. The key principles of light, sound and image capture will be examined. Analysis of the way in which visual and audio technique impact on an audience’s experience of a story will be undertaken. A number of narrative strategies and the cultural significance of story will be examined.
Module Overview:
Students will develop and produce a short film, starting with a script breakdown and location scouting before moving into casting and budgeting. Students will shoot and edit a short film as well as producing a behind the scenes reel with contributions from cast and crew to produce an EPK to help promote and contextualise the film.
