Aims

The aim of this module is to provide the student with an opportunity to gain experience and insight into at least one professional work environment. This will be achieved by undertaking a period of industry study with a host organisation or company involved in the performance, design, and production industries. The work placement should enable the student to utilise and practice many of the skills learnt during Levels 4 and 5, develop new practical skills and make possible contacts.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Develop and refine self-presentation and communication skills.
2.
Utilise and develop practical skills learnt at LIPA within an external professional context.
3.
Appraise professional roles and responsibilities within specific performance design and production industries.
4.
Evaluate your own work in relation to professional practice and reflect upon their future opportunities for employment.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module will be introduced with a series of lectures on professional practice and the possible roles that may be encountered on a work placement. These will include:
  • Methods and etiquettes of contacting businesses and verbal communication skills.
  • Level 6 students discussing their experiences from Level 5.
  • Visits from potential placement host organisations.
  • Health and Safety issues related to the work placement.

The lectures will be followed up with tutorials at points during the year as each student negotiates and secures placement activity. Students will be asked to secure their own placement through negotiation with a host employer and will be required to work within a professional environment for a minimum of three full weeks (15 working days). The placement or placements will need to be agreed with the Module Leader prior to commencement and appropriate paperwork completed. The student will then spend the allotted time away and write up and evaluate the experience in private study time.
Module Overview:
The Industry Placement module is an exciting and important opportunity to gain industry experience in your chosen field of work, while developing your employability and increasing your professional network. Through a series of lectures and tutorials with your module leader you will explore researching suitable placements that will allow you to independently contact and complete a minimum of two full weeks with an organisation or company involved in the performance, design, and production industries. This will provide you with a deeper understanding of industry practices within your discipline, increase your curriculum vitae experience and allow you to reflect upon your career aspirations.
Additional Information:
Through tutor guidance, students will identify appropriate periods within the year to complete the placement. It will be made clear to the student that if the duration of placement is longer than 3 weeks, it should be undertaken in a timely manner so that the assessment can be submitted by the deadline.
