Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Unit 1: Directing
In the early part of the unit taught sessions will concentrate on the creation of dramatic performance from extant script and the ways in which directors can organise, shape and form the work. Students will be expected to analyse and evaluate their own work and that of others. This phase will end with a series of observed rehearsals in which students explore a selected play text by directing their peers.
In the second phase of the unit students will individually articulate a director’s concept and develop key planning documents for a Youth Theatre production. The module will culminate in the student directing a scene from the production in an observed rehearsal with a group of young people.
Unit 2: Creating Devised Theatre
This unit will begin with the exploration of techniques used to create sustained, replicable pieces of performance in small groups. Students will then form devising teams and begin creating a short piece of performance on a given stimulus. The module concludes with an assessed presentation of each devised performance.
Unit 3: Performance Skills
In this unit students will engage in a range of skill classes to both improve their own performance ability and to inform their work as a director.

Module Overview:
This module centres on the two key modes of work as a director: the creation of dramatic performance from an extant script and the ways in which directors can organise, shape and form devised work when working with an ensemble.
To finish students will individually articulate a directors concept and develop key planning documents for a Youth Theatre production. The module will culminate in the student directing a scene from the production in an observed rehearsal with a group of young people.
