Aims

To provide an introduction to circuit analysis, two port network model, transient analysis, power generation, power system, three phase system, three phase power and per unit system.

Learning Outcomes

Analyse transient circuits with higher orders

Describe power system with generation, transmission and distribution and principle of power generation of single phase and three phase power and analyse simple three phase circuits and per unit system

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Circuit Analysis: The superposition principle, Node voltage analysis, Mesh current analysis, Maximum power transfer theory

Two port network model: Two port network parameters –Impedance parameters, Admittance parameters, hybrid parameters and ABCD parameters, symmetric and reciprocal network. T & π attenuators

Transients in R-L-C circuits: Laplace transforms- definition of the Laplace transform of a function; use of a table of

Laplace transforms. Transient analysis- expressions for component and circuit impedance in the s-plane;

First and second order systems- RL, RC and RLC networks- solutions using Laplace; Circuit responses: over, under, zero and critically damped response.

Power systems: Conventional and Non-conventional power generation, structure of transmission and distribution networks, principle of single-phase power generation using Faraday’s law, and three phase power generation.

Three phase systems: Star, Delta connection, three phase power, simple three phase circuit analysis and per unit system analysis.
