Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The syllabus has two strands of study: 1. Cultural Perspectives on Dance Students will be introduced to a broad history of Contemporary Dance and Commercial Dance from the 1970ies onwards and building on the Dance History content delivered in level 4. Sessions will be delivered via thematically based lectures and with the analysis of specific case studies. The primary focus will be contemporary and commercial dance genres, tracing routes and lineages and investigating the many points of cross fertilisation, also linking in the arts, theatre, film and other disciplines. Importance will be given to cultural studies and interdisciplinary approaches, considering elements such as dance in relation to political studies, cultural appropriation, race, gender and identity, and others. 2. Practice-based Research Methods Students will be introduced to practice-based research methods and encouraged to adopt a questioning approach to practice. Students will test and reinforce their own research strategies, expanding their skills and vocabulary required to undertake critical evaluation of performing arts practice. The aim is to foster an understanding of themselves as future dance makers, perceiving themselves as able to initiate and influence the way dance is created and framed in performance.
Additional Information:The module introduces students to Dance history of the last 50 years as well as study skills and professional development for the modern performer. This module equips students with an understanding of the historical and cultural contexts of the performing arts, providing foundational knowledge to consider and critique current practice in the field.
