Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Across both areas of study students will explore and develop the core skills of dance and dance training:
• Travelling, sequences and combinations
• Postural alignment, placement and centring principles
• Extension, flexion and suppleness in the body
• Control, strength and precision in movement
• Use of weight and space in relation to tasks
• Musicality- Rhythm, timing, speed and dynamic range
• Expression and artistry
• Movement and muscle memory
Building on from their studies at Level 4, students will continue to develop their technical and artistic skill and abilities in Commercial dance. The emphasis at level 5 is on the enhancement of precision, musicality, performance and theatricality. Commercial Dance is a wide genre of dance and in Level 5 students will be introduced to a broader range of styles and techniques. Students’ choreographic pick-up and retention skills will be honed by studying complex combinations in various styles.
As Commercial dance has entered the cultural mainstream, students will also look at how various dance forms have become integrated with one another. Dance styles studied in this module under the Commercial dance umbrella may include but are not limited to; Hip Hop (Foundation & New Style) Funk styles, House, Vogue/Fem and Commercial-Jazz.
Students will continue to develop the technical elements of Jazz dance technique, including but not limited to, isolation techniques, Mattox technique and Luigi technique. The focus at Level 5 will be on developing advanced levels of technical and performance skill by delivering more demanding choreography, complex combinations and highly dynamic phrase work. Focus will be on improving the students' adaptability and versatility by integrating more technical aspects into the choreography combinations delivered in class. Students will study traditional forms of Jazz dance choreography as well as current variations of the dance technique.
Additional Information:The module broadens and deepens the students learning in Commercial and Jazz dance techniques.
Assessment is via two formally assessed classes or performances.
