Aims

This module aims to give students an overview of key theories (such as semiotics, communication models and representation) so that they have a well-rounded comprehension of base concepts that may be drawn upon and applied in other practical modules.

The broad scope of this module will give students the chance to see theories applied across a range of cultural forms thus widening their sphere of reference.

It also provides underpinning knowledge and skills to enable students to reflect on their own work in the context of a wider understanding of artistic and cultural thought, and to prepare those who wish to progress to level 6 for the discourse expected at that level
