Aims
This module aims to develop and advance skills taught and practised in Design from Text 1 by further developing and demonstrating an understanding of the director/designer process, from idea generation to final presentation of a proposed design. This project also aims to give the designers a realistic awareness of working to budget in collaboration with a production manager as well as teaching and refining practical craft skills such as model making and costume drawing. It also aims to further develop verbal presentation skills.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Liaise and collaborate effectively with a director and a production manager, developing a positive working relationship.
2.
Research independently and effectively, to support and develop a design from a given text.
3.
Develop imaginative ideas, judging the practical and technical considerations of a given space, and work to a specified budget.
4.
Present work that communicates and applies ideas and technical information articulately, using models, technological media, and a variety of drawings.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module will be delivered by design staff and a freelance director through a series of lectures, workshops, field visits and individual tutorial meetings. There will be considerable research time and private study.
The module will begin with lectures and seminars introducing the given texts/brief. Students will work individually with the director through a series of one-to-one meetings on one of the chosen texts. Additional support will be provided by design staff and by a professional production manager. As the theoretical designs develop there will be additional lectures/workshops dealing with advanced model making, lighting visualisations, costume design, technical drawing and presentation skills. The final presentation of the finished proposed design will be before the entire group.
There will be a great emphasis on the detail, practicality and rigour of the final design.
There will be two assessment points, firstly the process, which will include all the meetings with the director and supervising staff and focus on the ability to develop and evolve an idea. The second assessment point will be based on the final presentation of the scheme which should include a completed model, costume designs, storyboard images and technical drawings. The effectiveness of the verbal presentation will also be considered.
