Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will introduce students to the importance of the role within criminal justice, and the impact that research has had on how the system operates. Students will explore qualitative and quantitative methods and why each have their strengths and weaknesses, and what can be done to mitigate these. Ethical considerations of research will be considered in a pragmatic way.
In addition students will have the opportunity to learn about data sets that are already available for use for research in criminal justice, how these can be used, and the pitfalls of relying on them too closely.
Students' knowledge of research methodologies and associated concerns will then be applied to the practical business of doing research and the difficulties inherent in this. In addition, students will learn about how to construct a literature review and research proposal.
Additional Information:This module covers the range of research methodologies, both qualitative and quantitative, used within criminal justice and the researching of crime. The course will allow students to consider the practical and ethical considerations in research, and allow them to develop skills in producing a literature review and research proposal for an original project
