Aims
To gain knowledge and insight into the prevention of alcohol and drug misuse; increasing critical awareness of the Public Health England strategy in relation to prevention.
To be able to identify the approaches used in relation to Primary, Secondary and Tertiary prevention.
To be able to discuss the links between Health Promotion and Harm Reduction in the context of prevention.
Learning Outcomes

Evaluate the nature, role and impact of educational approaches (including publicity and media) to preventing substance misuse starting.

Appraise the nature, role and impact of health promotion approaches to preventing substance misuse starting/escalating.
3.
Analyse the nature, role and impact of harm reduction, treatment and rehabilitation to prevent substance misuse escalating.
4.
Identify the key influences and the contribution of individuals, groups and organisations in preventing alcohol and substance misuse.

Additional Information:This module will introduce students to the Public Health England agenda of prevention in relation to drug and alcohol misuse. It will primarily focus on a UK perspective but with recourse to international perspectives as appropriate.
The module aims to explore how alcohol and substance misuse can be prevented at three stages: Primary Prevention, Secondary Prevention and Tertiary Prevention.
The module considers the various responses offered by education, criminal justice and substance misuse services towards prevention.
Students are required to develop a poster campaign that aims to prevent substance misuse. You will present your poster in a group setting offering a project rationale that includes and evaluation of the role of educational approaches in preventing substance misuse starting.
