Aims

This module is designed to ensure that learners are able to understand and articulate the key concerns and critiques of cultural policy, as well as appreciate the context for policy development. In addition it aims to introduce the learner to research methods and tools.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Research and analyse various cultural policies and evaluate their impact upon the UK cultural and creative sector
2.
Plan and implement an effective research strategy appropriate to their chosen topic
3.
Create an analytical and engaging 'discussion paper' in which they consider 'cultural policy' and argue a coherent and objective position for or against the policy's main theme

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Cultural policy scope and definitions • State intervention/Historical context • Local policy development • Supranational perspectives • Specific cultural policy e.g. TV, theatre, music and/or film • Evaluating policy: methods • Cultural policy futures: Web 2.0, technology, globalization • Contemporary Issues in Management Conference.
Additional Information:Students are expected to devise their own area of study as agreed with the Module Leader. This provides a bridge from Level 4 Context where students choose their area of study from set questions to Level 5 Context where students will have an entirely free choice of subject within which they will devise their own question. Students are expected to use journals as well as other sources. A formative, non-assessed assignment will be given (essay plan and research strategy) and issues from this will be addressed through group tutorial. The module leader is Dave Wibberley.
