Aims

To investigate current approaches to the study of mental health. To critically evaluate theories of mental health and distress, and related approaches to support and intervention. To critically examine contemporary models of mental health. To evaluate the impact of chronic health conditions on mental health and wellbeing.

Learning Outcomes

Examine contemporary approaches to understanding mental distress, associated factors, and the support and interventions enacted by healthcare professionals.

Describe, explain and evaluate current theories of mental distress.

Evaluate the theoretical and empirical rationale for interventions aimed at alleviating mental distress.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module critically examines core issues in the field of mental health. These include the conceptual and theoretical basis of a range of human experiences of mental distress. These could include, for example, experiences of worry, eating distress, psychosis and substance use. Students will be presented with information on contemporary models of human distress, covering a range of factors associated with mental distress and the support/interventions that are available for its alleviation. They will also critically examine the diagnostic approach of classification, and how it is used (or not) by different healthcare professionals. The aim of the module is to provide a basis for future study and/or employment in this fascinating area.
Module Overview:
This module will investigate current approaches to the study of mental health. It will critically evaluate theories of mental health conditions and related treatment options. You will consider models of mental health conditions and the benefits of moving towards a biopsychosocial model.
Additional Information:Mental Health Conditions is a 20-credit core module in level 5 of the Psychology programme. This module follows on from Concepts in Mental Health and Wellbeing at Level 4 and will investigate mental distress and associated factors.
