Aims

  1. Support students to identify, propose and undertake research into a field of interest related to graphic design, illustration or visual arts with reference to their interests, aspirations, ethical principles, lived experiences and personal values.
  2. Support students to identify original insights, explore new approaches and examine their discipline.
  3. Support students to develop the skills, knowledge, and agency to articulate research and plan for Level 6

Learning Outcomes

1.
Use a range of research methodologies to identify and examine information and knowledge from a variety of relevant sources, frameworks, traditions, practices, and knowledge systems.
2.
Apply a range of writing styles to analyse viewpoints, insights, ideas, and approaches related to a self-identified field of interest.
3.
Examine the role of research and writing within the context of their practice.
4.
Compose, present and justify a self-directed research project proposal for the Graphic Arts Research Project at level 6.
5.
Demonstrate the capacity to set goals, plan and organise tasks.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This syllabus is indicative:
  1. Communication skills: report writing. 
  2. Research proposal workshops (culture mapping and ideation, surveying and reviewing a field of interest, formulating a question, developing an action plan). 
  3. Research skills: Field mapping; qualitative and quantitative methodologies; ethics; primary research (interviews, surveys, visual diaries, cultural probes, site visits etc). 
Module Overview:
This module introduces you to a range of research methodologies and writing styles to widen approaches to critical investigation into, through, and for practice and develop your creative voice. You will identify and investigate a field of interest that reflects you and your future aspirations within graphic design, illustration or the visual arts, and use this to develop a project proposal and research plan to guide your L6 studies.
