Aims

This module aims to allow apprentices to critically explore the intersection of psychology and investigation. The module will examine current practices, techniques and applications of investigative interviewing. During this module apprentices will be exposed to UK and comparative international techniques in interviewing, the value of ethical approaches to interviewing victims, witnesses and suspects, the interpretation of verbal and physical behaviour, eye witness identification, question types and their influence on young and vulnerable people, influencing factors associated with confessions and false confessions. 

Learning Outcomes

Analyse the complex issues that criminal investigators face when interviewing suspects and how the application of practice builds legitimacy of investigative practice.
2.
Analyse the different methods and ethical concerns of conducting interviews of victims and witnesses.
3.
Examine the risks associated with interviewing young and vulnerable people and how suggestibility can lead to wrongful convictions
4.
Examine the evidence base associated with investigative interviewing and it applies to the real world environment

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The evidence base associated with the PEACE interview process.

The national principles of investigative interviewing. 

The PEACE interview process: • Planning and preparation • Engage and explain • Account clarification and challenge • Closure • Evaluation

Interview strategy and plan, including identification and initial accounts

Individuals who may need to be involved in interview process, including: • Interpreters • Legal advisors • Intermediaries • Appropriate adult • Interview Advisor

Key considerations for investigative interviewing: • Characteristics of victim, witness and suspect, including physical and environmental aspects e.g. location, room layout etc. • Fitness for interview: vulnerability, security and welfare of interviewee • Legal issues • Special arrangements e.g. interpreters

The importance of planning and having all necessary information prior to interview, including relevant interviewee information

Overall interview considerations, including: • Methods to ensure that information is being understood correctly • Challenging inaccuracies/inconsistencies,

Non-verbal signals seen in interviews; Recording an interview by audio/video or other means; Dealing with contingencies; Interview documentation to be completed; interviews other than at a police station, 

The right of silence, the concept of confessions and false confessions

The role of the appropriate adult
