Aims

1. Support students to engage in critical discussion and demonstrate an independent, critical approach to research. 

2. Support students to identify insights, explore approaches and demonstrate a contextual understanding of contemporary visual communication practice.

3. Support students to develop the skills and knowledge to articulate research.

4. Support the development of a community of ambitious, responsible practitioners with the capacity to make positive impact that reflects their interests, aspirations, ethical principles, lived experiences and personal values.

Learning Outcomes

Compare and analyse information and knowledge from a variety of relevant sources, frameworks, traditions, practices, and knowledge systems.

Examine viewpoints, insights, ideas, and approaches related to contemporary practice, research, and responsibility in visual communication.
3.
Present work referenced to Harvard-APA standard
4.
Discuss their research in the context of their practice.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
This module focusses on emergent research and practice, inviting researchers and practitioners to discuss and contextualise their work, as such this syllabus is indicative: 
  1. Communication skills: Journalistic / Editorial Writing. 
  2. Research skills: Mapping. 
  3. Contemporary approaches and knowledge: research; graphic design practice, illustration practice; responsible practice, speculative design, documentary drawing, editorial illustration, illustration research methods. 
  4. Ways of working: studio cultures, entrepreneurship, leadership, third sector, freelancing, alternative business models, nomadic approaches. 
  5. Themes: Ethics & responsible practice; Identity & Society; Climate Crisis; Emerging Technology; design thinking; design process; entropy and creative destruction; craft and production; authorship; playful practice; collaboration.
  6. Contextual Frameworks e.g. modernism, postmodernism, semiotics, communication theory, feminism, capitalism and Marxism, intersectionality, queer theory, field theory, (sub)cultural capital, decolonisation, entangled history, scenes and networks, critical theory, media, new philosophy 
Module Overview:
Through a focus on contemporary practitioners and researchers this module introduces you to new and emergent thinking, approaches and business practices in the Graphic Arts. Emphasising the role of the responsible practitioner, the module will challenge and expand your understanding of Graphic Design and Illustration, enabling you to identify and utilise contextual frameworks to develop your own viewpoints and a critical understanding of your practice.
