Aims

Develop knowledge and understanding of the investigative process in a range of operational contexts. Develop practical solutions to provide effective policing and law enforcement methods in this area whilst furthering their own competence within the discipline.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Explore the knowledge and skills required to conduct investigations. In doing so evidence an understanding of the relevance of liaising with specialists in relation to cases.
2.
Analyse the methods used to balance the intricacies associated with victim and witness care during an investigation, taking into account any additional professional considerations in how they are applied.
3.
Examine ways to ensure the well-being and resilience of the investigative team and self during an investigation.
4.
Evaluate how the application of practice influences legitimacy of investigation

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Theories and concepts associated with investigative practice, including Investigative Mindset, Five Building Blocks of investigation, ABC, Golden Hour principles. 
Crime Scene Investigation. 
Forensic opportunities.
Investigative decision making.
Developing a hypothesis.
Policy files and record keeping
Volume crime, priority crime and the risk of escalation
Legitimacy and the impact
Digital investigation and crimes in the cyber environment
Victim and witness management
Wellbeing and the impact on serious and complex crime investigators


Module Overview:
The aim of this module is to develop knowledge and understanding of the investigative process in a range of operational contexts. You will develop practical solutions to provide effective policing methods in this area whilst furthering your own competence within the discipline.
Additional Information:
Lectures will deliver the knowledge components to students. Directed study will reinforce areas. Workshops will provide opportunities to apply knowledge to scenarios and simulations. Where relevant and appropriate the concept of evidence based policing will be introduced and its relevance in this context explained. There will also be reference to the College of Policing ‘What Works’ facility. National Policing
