Aims

This module aims to develop students’ ability to individually produce a building design which is derived from an urban strategy and that reinforces public spaces, such as streets and squares, within a city district. The module also aims to develop students' graphic skills to show building proposal in an urban context as well as strategies for sustainable environmental design.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Develop an architectural design that responds to existing and proposed communities and urban context, meeting the needs and aspirations of building users.
2.
Synthesise the creative application of art, cultural, environmental or other work to architectural design projects, in terms of their conceptualisation and representation.
3.
Demonstrate the testing of architectural ideas within their urban context from initial building proposal through to final contextual design.
4.
Propose sustainable environmental strategies based on research and analysis of exemplary precedents.
5.
Prepare and present an architectural design project that assimilates a concept using a range of media in response to a brief.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
In this module students will work individually to develop detailed proposals for the design of a building; the site of each students' building is to be taken from a previously proposed urban design masterplan. Students will consider how the building contributes to a coherent public realm and how people will use the building. Detailed proposals for the building will address issues such as: sustainability, environmental design, materials selection and water.
Module Overview:
This module develops the urban design strategy into a building design proposal for a key site within the strategy. Module outputs will demonstrate the design proposal both spatially and technically within the urban context.
