Aims

To develop student initiated contextual topics and relevant research methodologies in relation to studio practice and wider contexts of contemporary fashion design and communication theoretical concepts. To engage in critical debate and analysis underpinned by a deepening knowledge and understanding of contemporary fashion issues through a written assignment leading to a proposal for Level 6 Research Project. To develop a body of work which effectively communicates issues concerning career directions and research interests based on student initiated field of interest.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate through supporting studies an ability to research and write a scholarly assignment based on a student initiated contextual studies topic.

Effectively communicate through the vehicle of a written assignment, a critical awareness of contemporary fashion practices (including research methods and scholarly sources) an individual theoretical research topic.
3.
Communicate ideas in alignment with a body of work and effectively showcase research interests, reflective and critical thinking.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
Through a series of thematic lectures with accompanying seminars and tutorials, the module will deepen the critical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of contemporary fashion issues which link to the studio modules. For example: Globalisation and the Impact of Fast Fashion; The Expansion of Fashion Cities and the Role of Trend Forecasting; The Cultural Significance of Gender-blurring; The Imaging of Fashion and New Innovations of Visualization. Research methodologies concerning primary and secondary data collection will underpin the critical context of the themes. This module is primarily concerned with developing a knowledge of theoretical issues plus student-initiated topics with relevance to their practiced - based interests. The two assignments will demonstrate focused topic interests through written formats. The proposal will explore a student initiated topic in the context of a critical framework developing focused theoretical understanding through a variety of types of writing – discourse, evaluation, analysis, synthesis – underpinned by an awareness of research methods appropriate to a rigorous scholarly investigation.
Module Overview:
The aim of this module is to gain a deeper understanding of contemporary theoretical design issues and contemporary fashion issues through a written assignment leading to a proposal for Level 6 Research Project.
Additional Information:
The delivery of this module is devised to engender a deeper understanding of contemporary theoretical design issues. It will facilitate the development of skills of critical analysis. Depth of scholarship accompanied with a theoretical understanding through effective written communication skills, are essential skills in this module.
