Aims
To advance critical independent learning, research and professional engagement in contemporary fine art practice.
To outline key debates concerning historical and contemporary theories in representation and visual culture.
To examine key artworks in their socio-political context and compare critical research methodologies.
To enhance communication skills.
To enable students to advance a personal interest related to their programme of study through reflexive writing.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Reflect upon an advanced programme of independent learning and practical work that links directly to their studio based practice and the development of a critical vocabulary and contextual knowledge of debates that have framed recent art practice.
2.
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of the role that critical engagement and reflexive writing plays in the production of contemporary fine art practice via a critical report and essay.
3.
Demonstrate a knowledge of and critical understanding of art through the analysis of key artworks from a historical and theoretical perspective and in ways that take aesthetic, institutional and cultural factors and methodological issues into account.
4.
Evaluate and critique concepts, theories, strategies and methodologies of criticality and representation.
5.
Mount a detailed argument in written format, using a range of textual and contextual evidence in its support.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:
Students will critically engage with a range of critical concepts, methods and debates within visual culture. The syllabus will be designed to develop the knowledge acquired in 4105FA and 4106FA and develop a more nuanced and sophisticated understanding of critical methodologies and debates via key thinkers, texts and works or art. These lectures will provide a basis from which students will be required to research more broadly and independently so as to reflect upon their own examples of artistic practice. Students will also engage with workshops around research and self-reflexive writing skills

This is related to your own studio practice by the writing of an essay and a report. The module prepares the students for the Level 6 research publication and in the development of their critical statements and viva.
