Aims

1. To develop critical thinking about the nature of criminological research and research problems. 2. To critically evaluate a range of quantitative and qualitative research methods used in relevant fields of enquiry. 3. To develop data analysis skills using quantitative and qualitative data.

Learning Outcomes

Critically understand the concepts, purpose, politics and ethics of criminological information and research.

Critically evaluate the principles, practice and politics of quantitative and qualitative methods in criminology.

Critically analyse and interpret both quantitative and qualitative data carefully and effectively and with due regard for political, ethical and procedural standards.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The assessment item list is assessed via the learning outcomes listed: • What is criminological information and research? • Principles of quantitative and qualitative research methods. • Defining and refining a research problem in criminology. • Data collection methods, implementation and managing data collection in the field. • Problem solving. • Sampling procedures. • Unstructured interviews, questionnaires, ethnographic approaches, feminist methodologies, e-mail interviews, diaries and focus groups. • Politics and ethics of research, reflexivity and representation. • Data preparation, verification, structure, quality and analysis.
Module Overview:
As a developing criminology researcher, this module is concerned with designing and undertaking a focused piece of criminological research using a synergy of quantitative and qualitative research methods. In carrying out your research and collecting your data, we expect you to give due regard to both the philosophical basis of criminological research and, just as importantly, to recognize the complex ethical issues that can often underpin research. You will be introduced to a several new pieces of ICT software for data management and retrieval.
