Aims

Equip student midwives with the knowledge, skills and values in order to deliver safe and effective midwifery care to women with complications during the childbirth continuum.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Display knowledge and understanding of complications that may affect women during the pregnancy continuum
2.
Critically evaluate the role of the midwife in the assessment, referral and care of women with complications during the childbirth
3.
Identify how the midwife can best support the woman, her partner and wider family when experiencing complications during the childbirth continuum.
4.
Critically analyse the evidence base which underpins the planning of individualised care for women with pregnancy complications.
5.
Critically review the professional accountability of the midwife in providing quality care to minimise adverse outcomes during pregnancy.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Genetics, genomics, placentation disorders, hypertensive diseases, eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, diabetes, epilepsy, oligohydramnios, polyhydramnios, prolonged rupture of membranes (PROM), amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy (ICP), antepartum haemorrhage (APH), postpartum haemorrhage (PPH), venous thromboembolism (VTE), disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), sepsis/infection, role of the midwife in recognising a deviation from the norm, professional accountability, maternal adverse outcomes, exam preparation.

Additional Information:The module will support students to explore the complications that can occur during pregnancy.
