Aims

After completing the module the student should be able to understand a range of research methods and source evidence to develop an ethics application informed by a research protocol.

Examine the value of research and analysis and be able to evaluate evidence to inform practice

Use a range of research methodologies to inform practice

Present research evidence in a formal setting

Gather, analyse, evaluate and use research information and knowledge to develop a research protocol ready for LJMU ethical approval

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
• Ethical issues in social work research • Process and procedure of application for ethical approval • Evidence Based Practice / Research Informed Practice • Methodologies and theories for research in social work • Reviewing and presenting research evidence for social work • Understanding people: using individual interviews for qualitative research in social work • Understanding groups: using focus groups for qualitative research in social work • Empowering service users: Participatory Action Research • Quantitative research for social work: Survey design • Writing a social work research proposal / preparation for ethical approval
